In Thursday’s (11/19) Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Chris Shull writes about Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra Composer-in-Residence Jennifer Higdon. “Two of her pieces (Machine and the bluegrass-influenced Concerto 4-3) were played by the orchestra in October, and two more (Loco and blue cathedral) will be featured in concerts in March. The Dallas Symphony recently opened a concert with blue cathedral and will perform her new Violin Concerto in May with celebrated soloist Hilary Hahn. … On Saturday, Cliburn at the Modern will showcase a more intimate side of Higdon’s engaging expression, presenting four pieces of chamber music at the Modern Art Museum. Higdon will be onstage during the concert to talk about her music and present insights into compositions.” On engaging with audiences, Higdon says, “I think for a long time a lot of contemporary music was kind of scary to listen to. I think the language has changed; I think it is absolutely imperative that the composer be a part of the process and get to know the audience. It’s kind of nice when you go back with an orchestra you start recognizing people in the audience that you met on previous visits.”
