“David Robertson wants you to come to hear the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra more than once or twice this year,” writes Sarah Bryan Miller in Sunday’s (9/15) St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Missouri). “He wants people to experience ‘the ways in which a lot of the programs interact, the ways that you can explore different ideas and align them’ through the music…. The SLSO’s 134th season begins this weekend with ‘The Star-Spangled Banner,’ Charles Ives’ ‘Three Places in New England,’ Aaron Copland’s ‘Lincoln Portrait’ and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. They weren’t flung together at random. ‘It’s a celebration of 150 years of the Emancipation Proclamation, 50 years of the March on Washington, 150 years of Gettysburg Address,’ Robertson says.… Benjamin Britten’s operatic masterpiece Peter Grimes will be heard in St. Louis on Nov. 16 and at Carnegie Hall on the 22nd, the 100th anniversary of Britten’s birth.” For the SLSO’s Beethoven mini-festival in January, “Robertson has paired [Brett] Dean’s ‘Testament’ with the ‘Eroica.’ ”
