New York Conducting Institute will present a conducting workshop for women, to be led by Diane Wittry, March 17-20. Twelve conductors have been selected for the workshop, and up to ten auditors will be invited to observe the workshop. Participants will receive seven 13-minute podium sessions (91 minutes of podium time over the course of the four days, some sessions with string quintet and piano, and some with orchestra). All podium sessions will be digitally recorded. Repertoire includes Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E minor, Op.64, and the 1919 version of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Wittry will lead sessions focusing on score analysis and study, “Baton Basics,” artistic leadership and concepts such as strategic programming and career development (based on Wittry’s Beyond the Baton book). A panel discussion with several female conductors will cover topics including succeeding in a male-dominated field and accepting and declining specific engagements. All workshop participants will be considered for Conducting Fellow positions for the 2017-2018 season with Pennsylvania’s Allentown Symphony Orchestra, where Wittry is music director.
