Make Music Chicago, a free all-day music event, will hold its inaugural festival in public spaces throughout Chicago on June 21. The festival, celebrating the ability of everyone to make music, is meant to be experienced by people of all ages and will include 30-minute concerts in a variety of genres performed by professional, amateur, and part-time music professionals. Held at Daley Plaza, the Chicago Cultural Center, Alliance Française, and St. James Cathedral Commons, among other locations, the festival will feature members of the Chicago Symphony, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and other arts groups, with an evening grand finale concert at the St. James Cathedral Commons from 5:15 to 9 p.m. Make Music Chicago is part of a larger series of free music festivals in 460 cities around the world on the same date, inspired by France’s long-running “Fête de la Musique” annual event on the first day of summer.
