Music Director Osmo Vänskä will conduct the Minnesota Orchestra in a Sibelius Festival that will begin on New Year’s Eve and continue through the month of January 2022. Four programs will include the composer’s seven symphonies, all previously performed during Vänskä’s tenure, which will conclude at the end of this season. The final Sibelius Festival program on January 15-16 will pair a performance of the composer’s Symphony No. 5 with an in-depth exploration of the work’s unusual history, hosted by Minnesota Orchestra violist Sam Bergman. Other programs will feature works for voice and orchestra and two versions of the composer’s Violin Concerto—the one familiar to most audiences, finalized in 1905, and the original, lesser-known version premiered in 1904. The orchestra won a Grammy Award in 2014 for its recording of Sibelius’s first and fourth symphonies.
