In Wednesday’s (11/10) Seattle Times, Michael Upchurch writes, “Cornish College of the Arts serves as host this Saturday to the Seattle Modern Orchestra, a new chamber ensemble devoted to 20th- and 21st-century music. The program, dubbed ‘Stopping Time,’ pairs Olivier Messiaen’s transcendent ‘Quartet for the End of Time’ (1941) with Dutch composer Louis Andriessen’s ‘Hoketus’ (1976), which puts a rhythmic device of 14th-century vocal music, the ‘hoket,’ to bracing use in a minimalist string setting. SMO is headed by French-American composer Jeremy Jolley and Taipei-born conductor Julia Tai. They plan to present four concerts in their 2010-2011 season.”
