“Patrick Castillo, who describes himself as ‘a composer, performer, writer, and educator,’ has been hired by the New York Philharmonic as VP of artistic planning,” writes Susan Elliott in Thursday’s (4/8) Musical America (subscription required). “He has been consulting for the orchestra under his predecessor, Isaac Thompson, who was promoted to managing director in December as one of two key executives under President and CEO Deborah Borda.… (The other appointee was Adam Cox, who moved from COO to executive director.) Castillo … started [at the Philharmonic] in 2002 as a public relations intern. Holding a BA from Vassar College in Music Composition and Sociology, he has since pursued a career as a composer, program-note writer, and new-music specialist, serving currently as the executive director of the Brooklyn-based ensemble Hotel Elefant, which specializes in contemporary fare by living composers. Castillo … has been artistically involved with [California’s] Music@Menlo since its beginnings, as well as with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, both as a pre-concert lecturer and post-concert soiree host…. Castillo has been working on planning the 2021-22 season. Castillo … was hired for three years in 2010 by the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra to look after artistic planning.”
