Musicians of the National Youth Orchestra of the USA have been producing and posting short YouTube videos during their 2014 residency and tour, now underway. The vignettes, each spotlighting players of individual orchestral instruments, include “Violin Side Story,” a West Side Story-style spoof; “Flute Duet,” riffing on flute duets and a snack-vending machine; an arrangement of “What a Wonderful World” featuring the cello section; “Viola Jokes Illustrated” as told by NYO-USA’s violists; and a Wild Kingdom-style documentary featuring “Low Brass in the Wild.” The NYO-USA is a program of Carnegie Hall, which this year asked each section of the orchestra to make a video. The 2014 summer U.S. tour, led by David Robertson, launches at the Performing Arts Center at Purchase College, SUNY (July 20), followed by dates at Carnegie Hall (July 22), Tanglewood (July 24), Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts in Boone, N.C. (July 26), Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Chicago’s Millennium Park (July 28), Walk Festival Hall in Teton Village, Wyoming (July 30), Green Music Center at California’s Sonoma State University (August 2), and Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (August 4).
