The Orchestra of St. Luke’s is in the midst of a three-week Bach festival in New York City featuring orchestral, chamber, and dance performances, under the direction of Principal Conductor Bernard Labadie. The June 6-23 festival began with the orchestra performing an all-J.S. Bach program with soprano Lydia Teuscher and countertenor Benno Schachtner; repertoire included arias plus the Sinfonias from Cantatas BWV 42 and 75, Cantata BWV 51, and Psalm 51, BWV 1083, after Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. Three “Bach Dances” programs feature the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s in Taylor’s dances set to Bach, plus world premieres of all at once, choreographed by Pam Tanowitz, and Rewilding, choreographed by Margie Gillis. Performers in the festival also include harpsichordist Pierre Hantai in Bach’s Goldberg Variations, pianist Pedja Muzijevic in music by Bach and David Fulmer’s Whose Fingers Brush the Sky and James Joslin’s Cadasquésan Landscape for piano, mechanical music box, and two metronomes.
