In Tuesday’s (11/24) Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Andrew Druckenbrod writes, “The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will renew its relationship with renowned author and music historian Joseph Horowitz when it offers a National Endowment for the Humanities teacher training institute in July. ‘Dvorak in America: In Search of the New World’ will take place 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. July 12-30 in the Music Building of the University of Pittsburgh. Teachers of grades 5 to 12 interested in incorporating the music and historical and sociological context of Dvorak’s time in America into their nonmusical studies can apply. ‘Our goal will be to produce curriculum materials that allow teachers to make this music an integral part of the story of America,’ says Horowitz, who credited the PSO for its role in presenting it. ‘It’s rare for an orchestra to host an NEH teacher-training institute of any kind.’ There also will be a concert that is open to the public.”
