In the days leading up to its November 9 concert of Holst’s The Planets, John Williams’s Suite from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and John Adams’s Short Ride in a Fast Machine, the Portland Symphony Orchestra in Maine will collaborate with several local organizations for “Universal Appeal,” a three-day exploration of symphony, sights, and celestial sounds. Among the participating organizations are the Nature Conservancy, which will collect donations at a November 8 open dress rehearsal for the Gulf Coast Restoration; and the University of Southern Maine’s Southworth Planetarium, which will co-host with the Portland-based SPACE Gallery a “Mythology of the Worlds” planetarium show on November 6, depicting stories behind the Greco-Roman mythological characters featured in The Planets. At the latter event, Planets Around the Sun, a Portland-area band, will perform music described as “inspired by universal harmonies.”
