Inés Voglar Belgique, the Oregon Symphony’s assistant principal second violin, will conduct the Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Young String Ensemble in a free public concert on May 11 at the Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) Community Center in Northeast Portland. The ensemble, made up of the youth orchestra’s youngest musicians, will perform Leroy Anderson’s Plink, Plank, Plunk!, the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, and an arrangement of Hans Zimmer’s Pirates of the Caribbean Suite. There will be a preconcert instrument petting zoo, where families can try string instruments and meet Portland Youth Philharmonic musicians. Voglar Belgique was born in Caracas, Venezuela and educated under the country’s El Sistéma music education program as well as in the U.S.; in addition to performing with the Oregon Symphony and conducting the PYP’s Young String Ensemble, she teaches at Lewis and Clark College and plays with the Portland contemporary-music ensemble Fear No Music.
