The Portland Youth Philharmonic’s 2019-20 season will feature a premiere by composer Kenji Bunch, a violist and Portland Youth Philharmonic alumnus, to be performed on May 3 at Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, Oregon. Music Director David Hattner will conduct the still-untitled piece, which was commissioned by Portland TEDx as the soundtrack for a short film that will use time-lapse footage to capture Portland’s different seasons. Portland Youth Philharmonic will also perform the piece live at the TEDx 2020 event on June 6 at Portland’s Moda Center. Other highlights of the orchestra’s season include Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony, Oscar Lorenzo Fernández’s Batuque, Nielsen’s Symphony No. 3 (“Sinfonia Espansiva”), Brahms’s Symphony No. 4, and Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture. The season will open in November with Gershwin’s Piano Concerto with soloist Joshua Ji, 14, winner of the 2019 Portland Piano International/SOLO Piano Concerto Competition.
