In Friday’s (1/10) San Antonio Express-News (Texas), Deborah Martin previews the San Antonio Symphony’s Dvorák Festival, which runs from January 10 to March 1, kicking off with the “Carnival” Overture and the Cello Concerto featuring soloist Jian Wang. “One of the guiding ideas behind the [San Antonio Symphony] festivals is to bring the symphony together with other classical music groups, allowing a deep dive into a composer’s work. This time around, the other presenters include Musical Bridges Around the World, Opera San Antonio, Camerata San Antonio and the San Antonio Chamber Music Society. The need to involve other groups was another reason to go with Dvorák: ‘It’s important that we have a composer that also has a variety of chamber music that inspires the other groups in the city,’ [Music Director Sebastian] Lang-Lessing said. The symphony’s Discover series, which offers family-friendly concerts, continues with an afternoon Feb. 9 [concert] dedicated to the ‘New World Symphony.’ Images of Lang-Lessing and the musicians will be projected onto screens overhead. ‘It’s a way to get a deeper insight into listening to a piece,’ he said. ‘It’s not a scientific approach to formal musicology; it’s more of a listener’s guide.’ ”
