G. Schirmer has added SchirmerOnDemand, an online viewing service that allows users to view scores of works by a selection of 20th- and 21st-century composers. Users can view the scores online after a free registration, and many scores can be printed out for perusal. Schirmer initially has made available 5,000 scores by composers like Samuel Barber, Elliott Carter, John Corigliano, Avner Dorman, Gabriela Lena Frank, John Harbison, Aaron Jay Kernis, Augusta Read Thomas, and Joan Tower. Also now online are 100 scores from the Hal Leonard catalog, which are available for viewing only. Within the next few years, the publisher plans to put its entire catalog online. When an orchestra expresses an interest in reviewing a score, it submits a request for a “perusal score,” which can then be viewed online or as a printout and shared with the various staff members involved in making program decisions. Rental or purchase arrangements must then be made with directly with Schirmer. Schirmer will continue to offer perusal scores that are bound with back-to-back pages and of a size larger than standard letter size; it says it added the online service as a way for interested parties to view many scores at one time and request a perusal score as needed.
