The Solti Foundation U.S. announced that it has awarded grants to Yaniv Attar, assistant conductor of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, and Christopher Hill, music director of the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in New Hampshire. Attar was named winner of the $5,000 U.S. Career Development Award, one of several grants given by the foundation to American conductors 32 years of age or younger. Hill was named winner of the U.S. Career Assistance Award, which comes with a $2,500 grant. The Solti Foundation U.S. was established in 2000 by Valerie Solti, Georg Solti’s widow, and their daughters Gabrielle and Claudia. Its mission is to assist talented young American musicians at the start of their professional careers. Since 2004 the foundation has focused on helping exceptional young conductors; its largest award, a $25,000 grant given on a biannual basis, is the Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award, next scheduled for 2011.
