Indiana’s South Bend Symphony Orchestra is in the midst of a music director search, with maestro Tsung Yeh set to retire in May after 28 years leading the orchestra. The first of the five candidates for the position, Alastair Willis, led a program of Mendelssohn, Dvořák, and Carter Penn on October 8, to be followed by Stilian Kirov (December), José-Luis Novo (January), Vladimir Kulenovic (March), and Keitaro Harada (April). Each of the five also is participating in education and community engagement activities and interacting with board members and community leaders. After each concert the orchestra is soliciting conductor feedback, including from the audience. Agnieszka Rakhmatullaev is executive director of the South Bend Symphony.
