How can music change the world? Yo-Yo Ma’s now sixteen-year-old musical collective, the Silk Road Ensemble, aims to find out. In a new documentary, The Music of Strangers, Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville (20 Feet from Stardom) looks back at Silk Road’s efforts to cross-pollinate culture and tradition through music. The film features Yo-Yo Ma, Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, Iranian kamancheh (Persian spiked fiddle) virtuoso Keyhan Kalhor, and Chinese pipa player Wu Man. The Music of Strangers had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2015 and began screening at U.S. theaters in June, with showings on HBO later in 2016.
