“Violinist Luke Hsu won the 41st annual Houston Symphony Ima Hogg Competition on June 4,” writes Andrew Dansby in Wednesday’s (6/8) Houston Chronicle (Texas). “Hsu is the second consecutive Houstonian to win the award, which brings with it a $25,000 prize and a solo opportunity with the Houston Symphony at Jones Hall on July 9. A Rice University Shepherd School alum, Hsu performed Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor. The other three finalists were cellist Christine J. Lee, percussionist Samuel Chan and pianist Brian Lin. All performed a concerto with the Houston Symphony before judges James Buswell, Erik Finley and Brett Mitchell and a live audience. Hsu also won the Hermann Shoss Audience Choice Award, and the symphony’s musicians presented him with the Robert and Nancy Peiser Award for Artistic Encouragement.… Nine years ago he played with [the Houston Symphony] after winning the 2006 Houston Symphony League Concerto Competition…. Hsu earned a masters of music at the New England Conservatory. He’s in the artist diploma program at the Royal Academy of Music in London.” Cellist Christine J. Lee was awarded second place, which wins her a $10,000 prize and a June 25 performance with the Houston Symphony.
