In Sunday’s (10/17) Charleston Gazette (West Virginia), Sara Busse writes, “Helen Lodge feels like she’s getting her Oscar. Years ago, she was chatting with longtime friend Rosalie Gaziano about her life of volunteering. ‘I told her, “Hollywood’s not gonna give me an Oscar. I’m not going to invent a vitamin that will win a Nobel prize. I’m not going to write a best-seller,” ’ Lodge recalled. ‘ “But I’m happy with my life.” ‘ When the West Virginia Symphony League first told Lodge they wanted to honor her for her many years of service, she thought to herself, ‘Well, I guess I’m getting my Oscar.’ … Lodge has held various positions with the Symphony, including serving on the board of directors, Symphony League president (twice), leading the Symphony Ball/Gala committee, chairing Symphony Sunday (twice), and spearheading, with McClaugherty, the Symphony Style Show for years. … Lodge continues to organize the food concessions for the event, and last year had 134 volunteers for the food committee alone. She’s currently president of the Youth Symphony board of directors, and has held positions on the national level with the League of American Orchestras.” Lodge and Music Director Grant Cooper will be honored at the West Virginia Symphony’s “Two Stars, One Passion” event on October 22.
