In Sunday’s (3/16) Plain Dealer (Cleveland), Zachary Lewis writes that for the Cleveland Orchestra’s 2014-15 season the orchestra “actively sought artists with history or kindred spirits in Northeast Ohio…. Consider the list of guest soloists. Stocked with such names as pianists Yefim Bronfman, Lang Lang, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Mitsuko Uchida; violinists Gil Shaham, Hilary Hahn, and Christian Tetzlaff; and cellist Alisa Weilerstein, it’s a genuine who’s who of Cleveland favorites.” Newcomers include pianists Jeremy Denk and Marc-Andre Hamelin, violinist Vadim Gluzman, cellist Gautier Capuçon, and mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill. “A rare appearance by the San Francisco Symphony and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas features ‘Drift and Providence,’ by Samuel Carl Adams, along with works by Liszt, Mozart and Ravel…. Headline projects for [Music Director Franz] Welser-Möst include Bach’s epic Mass in B Minor and the orchestra’s first performance of [Strauss’s] opera ‘Daphne,’ in concert version…. Composers Matthias Pintscher, Toshio Hosokawa, Arvo Pärt, Luca Francesconi, and Ryan Wigglesworth (the orchestra’s Young Composer Fellow) will keep Cleveland listeners apprised of the latest in contemporary music…. In Miami … the orchestra’s calendar … entails not four but five programs over the now-standard four weeks.”
