In Monday’s (3/17) Pioneer Press (St. Paul, Minnesota), Ross Raihala reports that pianist Jeremy Denk “has become the newest artistic partner of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra.… Denk, 43, was just awarded the Avery Fisher Prize.… In the past year, Denk has also been named a MacArthur Fellow … was deemed Musical America’s Instrumentalist of the Year and signed a deal with Random House to write his memoir.… SPCO president Bruce Coppock said he first encountered Denk’s work when he served on the jury that chose him as the 1999 winner of the Andrew Wolf Chamber Music prize. ‘We consider it a major coup for him to join us,’ Coppock said.” Denk “has appeared as soloist with orchestras in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and London. He has toured with the Australian Chamber Orchestra and will be the artistic director of this year’s Ojai Music Festival in California.” Denk has recorded two albums for Nonesuch, a Ligeti/Beethoven disc and Bach’s “Goldberg Variations.” At the SPCO he “plans to record a third album for Nonesuch that combines the works of Bach and Stravinsky. There are also plans for Denk and the SPCO to tour together in the 2016-17 season.”
