The League of American Orchestras has announced details of “Critical Questions/Countless Solutions,” its 2014 National Conference, June 4-6 in Seattle. The Conference will explore the many ways orchestras are adapting during an era of rapid change. Hosted by the Seattle Symphony, the Conference will kick off on June 4 with a keynote speech by Claire Chase—flutist and founder of ICE, widely regarded as a representative of the new generation of entrepreneurial musicians—about creativity, ingenuity, and change, which will be video streamed live beginning at 3:45 PST. The opening general session will also include performances by the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra, cello soloist Joshua Roman, and composer/DJ Gabriel Prokofiev. The Seattle Symphony and Music Director Ludovic Morlot will perform concerts on June 5 and 6; arts researcher Alan Brown will present “If It Ain’t Broke, Break It: What 10 Years of Research and Experimentation Tells Us About Audiences, Creativity, and the Future of Orchestras;” and League President Jesse Rosen will give a speech at the closing session on June 6. The Conference will include 21 elective sessions offering strategies, tactics, tools, practices, and research to explore key areas of interest to the orchestra field; and a free pre-Conference seminar, “Foundations of Collective Bargaining,” by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, from June 2-4.
