The inaugural Early Music Festival: NYC is set to take place at churches and other venues in New York City from June 13-19. The festival, juxtaposing works of Jean-Philippe Rameau and C. P. E. Bach with new compositions, was conceived by Jolle Greenleaf, artistic director of the vocal ensemble TENET, together with Donald Meineke, associate music director at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church. In a press release, Greenleaf notes, “In recent years, New York City has become a more fertile ground for musicians who are passionate about presenting early music in new and inspiring ways, and we want to honor and celebrate these exciting developments.” Cellist Paul Dwyer will perform all six J.S. Bach cello suites throughout the city in cooperation with the Five Boroughs Music Festival; the viol quartet Parthenia will perform music of fifteenth-century English Tudor and Stuart dynasties, together with harpsichordist Dongsok Shin and countertenor Ryland Angel; and the Diderot String Quartet will perform music of French composer Hyacinthe Jadin. Festival performers will also include harpsichordist Kenneth Weiss; the vocal quartet New York Polyphony; Antioch Chamber Ensemble, a choral group; and countertenor Drew Minter.
