“The Dallas Symphony Orchestra always kicks off the classical season in Vail, but for the ensemble’s musicians, the weeklong residency actually marks the end of the playing year,” writes Ray Mark Rinaldi in Sunday’s (6/22) Denver Post. “Their official performance cycle starts back home in the fall and the Colorado gig is the final bow before a little time off. Music Director Jaap van Zweden … [sees it] as a ‘celebration of the whole season.’ He programs it that way, too. Van Zweden will conduct three of Dallas’ six concerts, which begin June 27, and each feels like a celebration. Beethoven’s Ninth, Ravel’s ‘Bolero’ and Copland’s Third, built around ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’—they’re all huge and serious audience pleasers…. Vail has never heard van Zweden conduct Beethoven’s massive work. … This year’s performance will feature the Colorado Symphony Orchestra Chorus on the popular the ‘Ode to Joy’ finish…. Rounding out the repertoire is crucial to what van Zweden calls the ‘long line’ that connects Dallas and the Bravo! Vail festival.… The Philadelphia Orchestra follows for a week starting July 5; the New York Philharmonic performs beginning July 18.”
