“Bruce Kallos, board chairman of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, died suddenly Sunday afternoon at Wilmington Hospital from complications associated with a blood infection,” writes Margie Fishman in Monday’s (7/14) News Journal (Wilmington, Del.). Kallos was elected to his position in April. “The board will likely appoint board vice chairman Charles Babcock to the post, according to symphony general manager Diana Milburn.… Kallos’ focus was on ‘governance and sustainability,’ Milburn said…. Kallos helped oversee the century-old symphony during one of its most tumultuous periods when it nearly went bankrupt two years ago. Recently, the symphony announced a bigger season for 2014-15, including six classics concerts, four chamber concerts, a children’s concert and multiple collaborations with local arts organizations.… A Yale University graduate, he joined the DuPont Co. as a mechanical engineer in 1956 and rose to financial manager before leaving in 1992. He later managed Arlington County, Virginia’s $1 billion retirement fund…. Kallos’ mission was to strengthen relationships between the symphony board, musicians and donors. Under his tenure, the symphony hired a new development director Barbara Cairns and extended Music Director David Amado’s contract by another year. Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Christiana Hundred … in Wilmington.”
