“The Starship Enterprise has a new crew. Joining Capt. Kirk, Mr. Spock and their fellow explorers in the U.S. premiere of the ‘Star Trek’ movie franchise’s latest incarnation will be the Houston Symphony,” writes Steven Brown in Sunday’s (7/13) Houston Chronicle (subscription required). “The presence of a live orchestra lends the already successful movies a new electricity, says producer Steven Linder, who has watched the audiences’ reactions. ‘They literally cheer for the orchestra. They cheer for the (musical) themes. They cheer for the characters,’ Linder says…. ‘They cheer for the logos!’ … Between outbursts, Linder says, … ‘It’s silent. The audience is rapt in attention.’ … When [composer Michael Giacchino] was growing up, listening to his parents’ record collection led him to fall in love with classical music; movie scores helped spur him to learn about the orchestra. His goal is for history to repeat itself. ‘Just that connection of being in front of an orchestra is so important for kids,’ Giacchino says. ‘My hope is that they come to the concert hall for “Star Trek” and have such a great time that the kid says to the parent, “Can we go there and see something else?” ’ ”
