In Tuesday’s (7/29) Orange County Register (California), Angie Marcos writes, “Chapman University’s orchestra will open auditions to the public this fall…. ‘This is a terrific opportunity for our post-graduate musicians to continue to play while perhaps pursing other career paths,’ said Daniel Alfred Wachs, Chapman’s orchestra music director and conductor. ‘There are so many musicians out there who, for one reason or another, are not playing professionally but miss the camaraderie and shared experience of making music. I invite them to join us—they won’t regret it.’ The decision to allow nonstudents to audition was made in part because of the extra space the impending Musco Center for the Arts will provide, Wachs said. The only requirement musicians must meet is being able to be active participants in the orchestra, he said. Wachs is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music and The Julliard School and former assistant conductor of the National Orchestra of France and the Minnesota Orchestra. Repertoire for the upcoming season includes Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto, Vaughan Williams’ Fifth Symphony, and the complete incidental music to Mendelssohn’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ with members of Chapman’s Theatre Department. Orchestra members will also participate in a fully staged opera in the spring.”
