“Symphony Space, the miniature arts center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, is expected to announce on Monday that it has appointed Andrew Byrne as its artistic director,” writes Allan Kozinn in Sunday’s (8/17) New York Times. “The space has been without a director since January, when the composer Laura Kaminsky left the post…. Byrne takes over on Sept. 15. Mr. Byrne, a 48-year-old Australian who came to New York in 1993 on a Fulbright Scholarship to complete his doctorate in music at Columbia University, has worked at Carnegie Hall for 10 years, eight of them as the director of festivals and special projects. ‘It’s a different model,’ Mr. Byrne said on Friday, obliquely acknowledging that Symphony Space gives him a smaller palette than Carnegie Hall. ‘But we have performing arts, film and education programs within the house. What attracts me to Symphony Space is the opportunity not only to shape the full season, but also to shape the profile of the institution.’ ”
