“This week St.Clair begins his 25th season as music director of the Pacific Symphony,” writes Timothy Mangan in Sunday’s (9/20) Orange County Register (California). “The magnitude of it hasn’t quite hit St.Clair yet. ‘The closer it comes the more I realize, “I guess it is a big deal,” ‘ he says…. ‘For me, I just keep working.’ … His philosophy has always been to build the orchestra slowly and carefully. ‘An orchestra cannot grow like a weed; it has to grow like an oak tree,’ he says. … He feels his living here has made a difference, for him and the orchestra. ‘This is one thing that the board mandated early on—that I be resident here—and I think in hindsight that was really important.… I love living here…. My conducting has changed only because my relationship with the music and the orchestra has continued to evolve,’ he says…. His relationship with the orchestra remains a good one. … ‘I’m just one of the most fortunate music directors I know.’ ” The Pacific Symphony opened its 2014-15 season on September 25 at Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
