Iowa’s Quad City Symphony Orchestra, marking its 100th year in 2015, has launched “100 Years, 100 Cellos,” for which 100 full-size cellos will be sponsored and made into artworks by area artists. The orchestra is now in the process of obtaining corporate and individual sponsors for 90 of the cellos, with the remaining ten cellos to be painted by select “lead artists” and live-auctioned at a dinner just prior to the orchestra’s May 14 concert featuring soloist Yo-Yo Ma. The cellos will arrive in January and then be distributed to artists; from March 1 to mid-May, the cello/artworks will be displayed at indoor locations selected by the sponsors. All funds raised by the project will go to the orchestra and its education programs.
