Andrew Patner previews the 2015 season of the Grant Park Music Festival in Wednesday’s (1/7) Chicago Sun-Times. “From June 17 to Aug. 22, 30 concerts—all free—are on deck as usual, most outdoors at Frank Gehry’s acclaimed Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, others in the excellent indoor acoustics of the neighboring Harris Theater or in beautiful city parks on the South and West sides of the city.” In addition to concerts led by Artistic Director Carlos Kalmar and Chorus Director Christopher Bell, “Important conductors such as Thierry Fischer, Emmanuel Villaume and Thomas Wilkins are on the cards along with debuts by intriguing young leaders Karina Canellakis and Christoph Koenig.” Soloists include pianists Yevgeny Sudbin, Inon Barnaton, Terrence Wilson, Natasha Peremski, and Andrew von Oeyen; violinist James Ehnes; violist Roberto Diaz; and cellist Johannes Moser. A choral symphony by Kenji Bunch will receive its world premiere, and a choral symphony by James MacMillan its Midwest premiere. Other highlights include a two-concert 85th birthday tribute to Stephen Sondheim; a July 22 performance led by Ward Stare involving singers from the Ryan Center, training program of the Lyric Opera of Chicago; and an appearance by the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.
