In Wednesday’s (2/25) San Francisco Chronicle, Catherine Bigelow writes, “According to online lore, the Asian zodiac’s Ram is an earthbound creature—one that will imbue its considerate, artistic and harmonious characteristics into this new year. And while there’s no mention of the Ram’s aquatic proclivities, revelers alighting at Davies Hall on Saturday for the San Francisco Symphony’s Chinese New Year Celebration almost needed waders to traverse a gushing river of water that whooshed over sidewalks and gorged gutters like the mighty Yangtze. ‘Actually, that main breaking before our concert is incredibly fortuitous,’ Symphony President Sako Fisher noted as she greeted Imperial Dinner guests inside City Hall, ‘because in Asian cultures, water is a sign of prosperity. Aside from California needing water, that rush of water symbolizes what makes our city so vital.’ ” Conductor Mei-Ann Chen “presided over an all-Asian program featuring the Symphony orchestra with guzheng artist Su Chang, a featured soloist in 2011 when conductor Michael Tilson Thomas led the YouTube Symphony in Australia…Led by event chairwoman Iris Chan, this 15th anniversary fundraiser benefitting the Symphony’s free music education programs was its most successful ever—having sold out months ago among 580 dinner patrons.”
