In Friday’s (4/10) Journal-Star (Lincoln, Neb.), Jeff Korbelik reports that Caleb Bailey, orchestra manager of Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, has been named executive director of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra. The 29-year-old Nebraska native “will replace Isabelle Singer, who is retiring in June after 31 years as ECSO’s executive director. Bailey will begin July 1…. The 65-musician ECSO, founded in 1946, is based in New London, Connecticut, and works with a $750,000 operating budget…. ’When visiting with [ECSO] constituents in March, it was very clear to me that this is a community that holds its orchestra in high regard,’ Bailey said.” Bailey “graduated in 2010 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor’s degree in arts-communications studies. He also is currently enrolled in the League of American Orchestras’ Emerging Leaders Program designed to identify, develop and support the next generation of orchestra leaders…. Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra executive director Barbara Zach said she hired Bailey five years ago despite no music experience. ‘There was something about his attitude and the way he related to people,’ she said, noting Bailey then immersed himself in the business after joining LSO. ‘He is so positive, friendly and just so competent.’ ” Bailey also participated in the League of American Orchestras’ Essentials of Orchestra Management course.
