The University of Miami Frost School of Music (Coral Gables, Fla.) has announced the appointment of award-winning film composer JAMES NEWTON HOWARD as artistic director of its Henry Mancini Institute, a graduate-level professional training program that provides 65 students with performing and recording experience through its HMI Orchestra. Howard, who takes up his new post in January 2016, succeeds trumpeter/bandleader TERENCE BLANCHARD, who directed the institute for seven years. Howard has composed music for more than 120 films, received eight Oscar nominations, and was honored with ASCAP’s Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement.
