Tune in on Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16 for live radio broadcasts of the Minnesota Orchestra’s groundbreaking concerts at the Teatro Nacional in Havana, Cuba, led by Music Director Osmo Vänskä. Each concert will be broadcast at 7pm (Central Daylight Time) on Classical Minnesota Public Radio and also distributed nationwide through local public radio stations (check local listings). Friday’s all-Beethoven program will include the Egmont Overture, Symphony No. 3 (“Eroica”), and Choral Fantasy, with Cuban pianist Frank Fernández, vocal soloists, Cuban National Choir, and Coro Vocal Leo. On Saturday, the orchestra will perform Cuban composer Alejandro García Caturla’s Danzón, Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, and Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Suite. The Minnesota Orchestra’s appearances in Cuba—part of the nineteenth annual International Cubadisco Festival—represent the first performances by a U.S. orchestra since President Obama took steps to normalize relations between the countries in December.
