“Chicago’s new music environment has evolved in the five seasons that Mason Bates and Anna Clyne have stood at its forefront” as resident composers at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, writes John von Rhein in Tuesday’s (5/26) Chicago Tribune. “You can read it in the young, enthusiastic audiences [and] in the coming together of the CSO and the local community of composers and new music performers in ways that could have been scarcely imagined decades ago. Those healthy innovations … are the legacy they will leave behind once their residencies end next month…. Each composer will have a CSO-commissioned work premiered by the orchestra” to end their residencies this season: Clyne’s The Seamstress, a “quasi-concerto” for violin with soloist Jennifer Koh; and Bates’s Anthology of Fantastic Zoology.… The composers will host their final MusicNOW concert June 1 at the Harris Theater, with avant-garde jazz artists John Zorn and Myra Melford playing their own music.” In the article Clyne and Bates share their reflections on their time as CSO residencies. The next CSO resident composers at the CSO are Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek.
