The American Composers Orchestra is in the midst of its third annual Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute from August 8 to 13 at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music in California. At the institute, 35 jazz composers explore writing for symphony orchestra by working with mentor composers, conductors, and performers; faculty include JCOI Director James Newton, Derek Bermel, Anthony Davis, Gabriela Lena Frank, Anthony Cheung, Vince Mendoza, Nicole Mitchell, and Christopher Rountree, artistic director of the contemporary classical ensemble wild Up. On August 12, Rountree will lead wild Up in the world premiere of a new work by Chris Kallmyer, as well as Frank’s Journey of the Shadow, Newton’s Elisha’s Gift, Cheung’s Time’s Vestiges, Steve Coleman’s Tempest and Synovial Joints Movements I & IV, and selections from Mendoza’s quintet Funky Diversions in Three Movements. The institute is presented by ACO in cooperation with the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music and Center for Jazz Studies at Columbia University, and EarShot, the National Orchestra Composition Discovery Network. EarShot is a partnership between the League of American Orchestras, American Composers Orchestra, American Composers Forum, American Music Center, and Meet the Composer.
