“Marin Alsop, who has collaborated with the Peabody Institute on various projects since becoming music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, will now have an official post at the conservatory,” writes Tim Smith in Saturday’s (8/29) Baltimore Sun. “She succeeds one of her mentors, Gustav Meier, as director of graduate conducting, effective immediately. Alsop has been a distinguished visiting artist on the Peabody faculty. Last season, she started a Naxos recording project with the Peabody Symphony Orchestra devoted to music of Pulitzer Prize-winning faculty member Kevin Puts. She was also instrumental in creating the BSO-Peabody Conducting Fellowship. In an announcement of Alsop’s appointment released Friday, Peabody dean Fred Bronstein said that her ‘bold vision and innovative approach will further enhance our conducting program … [And] our students will benefit tremendously from this increased opportunity to work with a conductor of Marin’s caliber.’ … Alsop’s statement praised Meier, a distinguished teacher who has mentored many successful conductors in a long career that included almost two decades at Peabody. ‘It is an incredible honor to accept this baton from my colleague and friend, master teacher Gustav Meier,’ Alsop said. ‘His commitment to shaping the talents of young musicians has been an inspiration to me.’ ”
