In Thursday’s (8/20) New York Times, Dave Itzkoff reports, “The Italian conductor Riccardo Muti will lead the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, The Associated Press reported. Mr. Muti, who last year agreed to become the music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra starting with its 2010-11 season, would hold both positions after joining the Roman opera house in December 2010. Citing a news release from city officials, The A.P. said that Gianni Alemanno, the mayor of Rome, had met with Mr. Muti in Austria to discuss the arrangement. Mr. Muti has served as the principal conductor of the New Philharmonia (now Philharmonia) Orchestra in London and the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He turned down the music directorship of the New York Philharmonic in 2000, and in 2005 resigned from La Scala in Milan amid a heated dispute with its musicians and house workers.”
