The Boston Modern Orchestra Project has announced that it will host a festival of American vocal music in partnership with the Florestan Recital Project and Tufts University Department of Music. The Voice of America festival—a six-concert series at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, from September 25 to 27—will feature American music for voice and ensemble by composers including Milton Babbitt, Aaron Copland, Jacob Druckman, John McDonald, and Virgil Thomson, as well as the complete songs of Samuel Barber. Works will include Barber’s Dover Beach and Knoxville: Summer of 1915; Copland’s Eight Poems for Emily Dickinson; Scott Wheeler’s The Gold Standard; Babbitt’s From the Psalter; and Druckman’s Lamia. Boston Modern Orchestra Project Artistic Director Gil Rose is curating the Voice of America series; Rose also conducts the Tufts Symphony Orchestra and is on the music faculty at Tufts. The Florestan Recital Project, founded in 2001 and based in Boston, promotes song repertoire through concerts, commissions, and educational residencies.
