“A two-evening Shakespeare Festival, the return of Pink Martini and the launch of ‘Only in Omaha’—concerts you won’t hear anywhere but here—are highlights of the 2016-2017 season for the Omaha Symphony,” writes Betsie Freeman in Wednesday’s (3/16) Omaha World-Herald. “Only in Omaha” concerts are “created exclusively for the symphony by its local artistic team. Such shows have been created in the past—the Omaha Symphony Christmas Celebration is the prime example—but … patrons … can expect more programs [including] ‘The Judy Garland Songbook’ in the Pops series and ‘A Tribute to Journey’ featuring [tribute band] ReCaptured … in the Rocks series.… The symphony also will premiere composer Jim Beckel’s Concerto for Brass … [and] perform Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique and Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony…. A concert featuring a showing of Raiders of the Lost Ark with the symphony’s accompaniment will mark that film’s 35th anniversary…. Concertmaster Susanna Perry Gilmore and oboist Alexandra Rock will be featured in Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Oboe. Cellist [Joshua] Roman will return to Omaha for … Aaron Jay Kernis’ ‘Dreamsongs.’ … The symphony also will perform Mozart’s Requiem with a 500-voice chorus.”
