The Waynesboro Symphony Orchestra in Virginia will celebrate its 20th anniversary with concerts of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on April 23 and 24, led by Music Director Peter Wilson. The concerts, also featuring the Schola Cantorum of Waynesboro, will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Staunton, Virginia and the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro. Among the vocal soloists will be soprano Penelope Shumate, returning to her hometown for the occasion. Founded in 1996 with 23 members, the WSO has since doubled in size and comprises professional, student, and community musicians from Waynesboro and surrounding communities, including Richmond, Monterey, and the Washington DC area. In addition to regular concert performances, the WSO also has a String School, providing free violin, viola, cello, and bass lessons for area children. Musicians from the String School will perform at the beginning of both programs.
