The National Symphony Orchestra has announced that 59 students from 26 states, three countries, and Puerto Rico are convening at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for the National Symphony Orchestra National Trustees Summer Music Institute 2016, June 27 to July 25. Launched in 1993, the Summer Music Institute (SMI) has served more than 1,500 young musicians. Over four weeks, participants will perform ten free public concerts at the Kennedy Center. The Institute trains participants for futures in music through intensive coaching by members of the NSO; private lessons; full-orchestra and chamber music; side-by-side rehearsals with NSO members; seminars on practicing, audition techniques, wellness, creativity in community engagement, and citizen artistry. Additionally, students will perform on Capitol Hill in the Russell Senate Office Building, where they will meet with senators and representatives. Elizabeth Schulze returns to the Kennedy Center for her sixteenth season as conductor of the Summer Music Institute. Among the Institute participants are five students identified through the Kennedy Center’s Young Artists of Color National Training Initiative, and four from the NSO’s Youth Fellowship Program.
