“The San Diego Symphony’s Summer Pops may have a new name—Bayside Summer Nights—but the mission remains the same: bring great music to a great venue,” Embarcadero Marina Park South, writes Michael James Rocha in Thursday’s (6/30) San Diego Union Tribune. “This year, the symphony’s summer lineup offers a little bit of everything for everyone. There’s jazz and country as well as musical tributes to Broadway and Hollywood. ‘This summer has the best of past summer seasons as well as new artistic initiatives,’ said Martha Gilmer, CEO of the San Diego Symphony. ‘We’ve stretched our horizons to bring you a wide range of music … and of course, at the very center of it all, our own San Diego Symphony Orchestra.’ … Matthew Garbutt, who has been the principal Summer Pops conductor for more than a quarter century, will be back at the podium at this weekend’s concerts, which will feature Broadway star Melissa Errico, the San Diego Master Chorale and fireworks.” Other concerts through September 4 will feature the Cash’d Out, a Johnny Cash tribute band, as well as Diana Ross, Bernadette Peters, and a “1812 Tchaikovsky Spectacular.”
