MICHAEL BECKERMAN, a professor of music at New York University and a leading authority on Antonin Dvorák, has been appointed by the New York Philharmonic as Leonard Bernstein Scholar-in-Residence for the orchestra’s 175th season, 2016-17. He will play a key role in “The New World Initiative,” a citywide project revolving around the “home” theme of the season and inspired by Dvorák’s “New World” Symphony, which was given its world premiere by the Philharmonic in 1893. Beckerman will lead a September 12 event in Lincoln Center’s David Rubenstein Atrium exploring African American influences on Dvorák’s music, and will be involved with the Philharmonic’s education and outreach programs throughout the season.
