The Buffalo Philharmonic’s live performance of Brahms’s Symphony No. 2 and the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with soloist Chloe Hanslip, led by JoAnn Falletta, has been released on BPO Live. On September 30, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will release Schoenberg’s Kol Nidre and Shostakovich’s Suite on Verses of Michelangelo Buonarroti on its CSO Resound label, with Music Director Riccardo Muti leading the CSO Chorus and bass Ildar Abdrazakov as narrator. The Minnesota Orchestra’s recording of Sibelius’s Symphony Nos. 3, 6, and 7, led by Osmo Vänskä, has been released on the BIS label. The Montreal Symphony Orchestra is featured on Decca’s recording of Honegger and Ibert’s jointly composed opera L’Aiglon, which has won Germany’s ECHO Klassik 2016 award for best opera (20st and 21nd century). The New York Philharmonic has released Mahler’s Symphony No. 6, led by Semyon Bychkov and recorded live in February 2016, as a digital download. The New York-based Park Avenue Chamber Symphony has released two recordings on the Recursive Classics label, the first featuring Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, the second featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 and Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture, plus music by Bartók, Copland, Stravinsky, and Vaughan Williams. David Bernard is music director of the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony. On September 30, Nonesuch will release John Adams’s Scheherazade.2 featuring the St. Louis Symphony led by David Robertson and featuring violinist Leila Josefowicz. The Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival’s 2015 performance of Messiaen’s Des Canyons aux étoiles is featured on a new eOne recording, led by Alan Gilbert, the festival’s artist in residence that season. The San Francisco Symphony’s recording of Debussy’s Images, Jeux, and La plus que lente, led by Michael Tilson Thomas, will be released on October 28 on the orchestra’s SFS Media label. On October 14, the Orange Mountain Music label will release Concerto for Violin, Rock Band and String Orchestra by Mike Mills, bassist and keyboardist for the band R.E.M. The Toronto Symphony Orchestra premiered the work in June; the studio recording will feature conductor Ward Stare, violinist Robert McDuffie, and musicians from Mercer University in Macon, Georgia. On September 30, the London-based Academy of St Martin in the Fields will release For the Love of Brahms featuring the composer’s Double Concerto for Violin and Cello in A minor and the Piano Trio in B Major, with cellist Steven Isserlis, pianist Jeremy Denk, and violinist Joshua Bell (the orchestra’s music director).
Label and soloist news: Cellist Maya Beiser has released the solo album TraceClassical on the Innova label, featuring music by Imogen Heap, John Adams, and Hildegard von Bingen, among others. Pianist Lang Lang has released New York Rhapsody, a Sony album that includes music by Gershwin, Bernstein, and Lou Reed. Deutsche Grammophon has released the second volume of The Leonard Bernstein Collection as a 64-CD set featuring music from Mahler to Wagner; volume 1, covering Beethoven to Liszt, was released in 2014. Classic FM’s subscription streaming service, launched in 2014 and featuring music from Decca and Deutsche Grammophon recordings, has been discontinued.
