In Monday’s (10/5) Post Star (Glens Falls, New York), Lydia Wheeler writes, “The bows of in the violinists’ hands did a dance of their own on Sunday at the Glens Falls Symphony Orchestra’s opening concert, ‘Chasing Light…Degas & Music.’ The symphony debuted its 2009-2010 season at the Glens Falls High School featuring a larger membership this year and new performances. Bryan Kirk, president of the symphony’s board of directors, said season subscriptions went up more than 30 percent this year over last, an increase he chalked up to marketing. … Season ticket-holders jumped from 300 to 400 this year. The first concert opened Sunday with ‘Les Toreadors’ from Carmen Suite, a piece composed by Georges Bizet in the 1800s. Later, during a performance of ‘Chasing Light,’ the composer, Joseph Schwantner, stepped out of the audience to explain his piece and the meaning behind it.” The work was commissioned by 58 American orchestras as part of Ford Made in America, a partnership program of the League of American Orchestras and Meet The Composer, made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. Major support is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, with additional funding from The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trusts, and The Amphion Foundation.
