“Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra music director Michael Butterman announced the 2017-18 concert season Sunday afternoon during an event at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art,” reports Kelly Dean Hansen in Monday’s (3/6) Daily Camera (Boulder, Colorado). “The announcement came as the orchestra prepares for its trip to Washington, D.C., at the end of this month, where it will be one of four orchestras invited to perform in the inaugural SHIFT Festival at the Kennedy Center. A local preview of the SHIFT concert will be heard March 25.… For 2017-18, the orchestra will continue its successful formula of innovative approaches to new music combined with high-caliber guest artists and beloved symphonic masterworks. Two Colorado premieres, each part of a co-commission involving the Phil and other organizations, immediately stand out. The season will end with a full concert performance of Leonard Bernstein’s masterpiece, West Side Story.… In addition to five regular subscription classical concerts and the annual Nutcracker ballet on Thanksgiving weekend, the Phil will again welcome Cirque de la Symphonie.… The opening night concert on Sunday, Sept. 24 begins with the first co-commission,” Christopher Theofanidis’s Dreamtime Ancestors; the other co-commission will be the Colorado premiere of a piano concerto by Philip Glass.
