“This past Tuesday, the administrators of Rider University reached a decision concerning the future of the Westminster Choir College, the school’s Princeton, New Jersey campus,” writes James Bennett II on Thursday (3/30) at New York classical station WQXR. Westminster Choir College is a residential music conservatory, founded in 1926, that is a part of Rider University. “Westminster will live on as an institution. It will be sold to an outside buyer, and although University leadership wishes that the new institution will keep Westminster in its longtime Princeton home, it is still open to selling the school to an institution that would relocate Westminster to a new campus… Westminster has enjoyed its own distinct identity despite being a constituent of Rider University since 1992, when the two institutions merged…. the University Board of Trustees has made the decision that a sale of its music school is in the best interest of both schools. Westminster … has nurtured talents such as Diane Curry, Julia Perry and Yannick Nézet-Séguin…. The school is not closing. PricewaterhouseCoopers, the U.K. accounting firm tasked with negotiating the sale, ideally has 12 months to find a buyer.”
